Brian Thomas Funeral Services

This project examines the often unseen world of funeral care in Wales through the daily work of Brian Thomas Funeral Directors. By spending time behind the scenes, I was able to observe the precision, craftsmanship and quiet dedication required to prepare a funeral service from start to finish. In a profession shaped by tradition, responsibility and community trust, the team’s commitment to their work stands out against a backdrop of increasing commercialisation within the wider industry.

Their story reflects the broader pressures faced by independent funeral homes: rising operational demands, the need for specialist skills and the constant expectation to provide a personal, dignified service for every family they support. Despite these challenges, their focus on care, craftsmanship and local connection demonstrates the enduring value of small, community‑rooted funeral directors in a sector where large corporate chains continue to expand.

Working within the workshop and preparation areas, I came to understand not only the technical expertise involved in coffin making and service preparation, but also the emotional labour and sense of duty that underpin each task. My photographs aim to document the structure of their working day, the detail of their craft and the steady professionalism that guides every decision behind the scenes.

This work is dedicated to recognising the importance of independent funeral directors like Brian Thomas, not simply as service providers, but as essential pillars within their communities. In a landscape where individuality is often overshadowed by scale, their story highlights the human care, skill and integrity that lie at the heart of every funeral they prepare.
